Clyde Gateway

INCH were commissioned by Clyde Gateway to undertake Care and Repair on the Gas Purifier Shed and adjoining Gas Meter House, Dalmarnock, Glasgow. The buildings, (c.1900) occupy a prominent position along Old Dalmarnock Road. Despite not being historically listed, the buildings represent a unique example of Glasgow’s industrial architecture and provides a historic node in the recently redeveloped Dalmarnock area of Glasgow.

Following the closure of the Gas Works, the buildings were predominately unoccupied, although featured in the visual arts biennial ‘Glasgow International’ with the installation of ‘The Regenerators’ by local artist Mick Peter.

INCH architecture delivered a sensitive fabric repair package, re-roofing and careful restoration of key elements as required to preserve the buildings and prepare them for future use.

The works exposed several unique design features, including a double-vaulted steel roof structure and complex brick detailing, which were retained and are celebrated in it’s existing condition and proposed future uses.

INCH future proofed the design, guiding the enhancement of specifications for replacement roofing which, while increasing the budget would in future unlock the development potential of the structure withing the Eastworks proposals, also designed by INCH.
