Millknowe Terrace

Adaptations of a listed building into dementia-friendly flats

Argyll Community Housing Association

INCH Architecture worked with Argyll Community Housing Association on the alteration and upgrade to an existing ground floor shop unit, and upper floor flat to create two new dementia-friendly flats.

The layouts were designed not only to maximise accessibility for older people but also to maximise safe occupancy. INCH provided specialist guidance and detailed specifications to ensure that the selected fittings were dementia-friendly.

The flats have been designed to meet the latest energy efficiency standards for social housing within Scotland.  The original listed building was given a thermal fabric upgrade and new ASHP’s were introduced to provide a sustainable heating source.

Millknowe Terrace was part of INCH’s ongoing research into and practice in development and delivery of dementia-friendly housing. Repurposing existing housing stock in order to accommodate the rapidly shifting needs of older populations is a social care priority.
